News Release: Chief Justice Names Post-Pandemic Workgroup

March 23, 2021

Strategic Response to the Pandemic

The Chief Justice and the Judicial Council of California have employed a phased strategic response to the COVID-19 pandemic:

Phase 1 (March 2020): approval of a series of emergency response measures.

Phase 2 (June 2021): Fiscal Year 2021-2022 state budget.

Phase 3 (March 2021) focuses on refining and enhancing court practices based on lessons learned during the past year, coordinated by the Ad Hoc Workgroup on Post-Pandemic Initiatives to:

  • examine successful court practices adopted during the pandemic in order to increase access to justice, modernize services, and promote uniformity in court practices going forward;
  • seek input from court leadership, court users, and justice system partners;
  • consider jury system reform, unlawful detainer processes, and streamlining case processing practices.

The workgroup will make recommendations to the Judicial Council, and coordinate accordingly with council advisory committees.
